MBS donates $144,000 to help with the cost of sign language interpreters

The Singapore Association for the Deaf and the hearing impaired in Singapore have been given a boost with a $144,000 donation from integrated resort Marina Bay Sands.

The Association plans to use this money to enhance their sign language interpretation service and hire more sign language interpreters.

Currently, members of the association can engage an interpreter for free for up to 20 sessions when they need help with communication, for example, at a medical check-up or during class lectures.

But with only two full-time interpreters and 20 volunteers, the reach of the programme is limited. The association now hopes to hire three more full-time interpreters with the donation and reach out to more people from the deaf community.
