Marine Parade Market and Food Centre reeked of a foul smell after the area was hit by floods caused by the heavy showers on Wednesday.
Hawkers and stallholders, seen working in four-inch deep rainwater, said business has been badly affected because of the flooding. "Once the place is flooded, no customers want to come in," said hawker Tan Ah Guan, the 62-year-old owner of the famous Apollo Fresh Cockle Fried Kway Teow.
Others said they tried to sweep the water into the gutters as quickly as possible, but a faint stench lingered on due to the dirty water that had flowed out of the toilets at the centre.
Hawkers said the toilets' drainage system has been a problem especially over the past few years, and the situation is exacerbated each time there is heavy rain. The last time the problem occurred was just two days ago, following a similar downpour.
