An unemployed man was jailed for three years on Wednesday for using and attempting to use fake $100 notes.

Mohd Ikram Mohamed Thahir, 27, committed the offences at Green Leaves Impex and Holi Department Store at Haig Road on Feb 23 with his girlfriend, Azlynn Elisa Zainal Abidin, 17. Azlynn Elisa will be sentenced in a Community Court on Friday.

The court heard that the couple used the counterfeit $100 note to pay for a packet of cigarettes at Green Leaves Impex, a provision shop, and got back change of $89.60.

After they had left, the provision shop owner felt that the currency note seemed fake. Her suspicion was confirmed when she compared it with a genuine note. She informed the manager who reported to the police. That evening, the couple went to Holi store where Azlynn Elisa tried to use the fake $100 to buy $10 worth of clothes but was rejected. Mohd Ikram then took out a genuine note to pay for his items.

Both were arrested that evening.

Two other charges of counterfeiting nine pieces of fake $100 bills and having instruments for counterfeiting were taken into consideration.
