Man jailed 8 weeks for stealing from a commuter in MRT train

A Chinese national was jailed for eight weeks on Friday for stealing from a commuter in an MRT train. Wei Guangyao, 30, admitted to stealing a wallet worth $360, which contained $40 and various cards, from Ms Gong Ningmei, 25, a Chinese national, in a train travelling between Kallang and Raffles Place MRT stations on Dec 26 last year.

The court heard that acting on a tip-off, a party of officers trailed Wei from Aljunied MRT station that morning. He was seen standing close to Ms Gong who boarded a train at Kallang MRT station before alighting at Raffles Place.

The officers followed Wei who alighted at Outram Park station and saw him throwing cards into a dustbin nearby before entering the MRT station and taking another train. Ms Gong's cards and some receipts were recovered from the dustbin.

The party of officers detained Wei after he alighted at Kallang MRT station. They found the victim's wallet on him. He could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined for theft.
