SINGAPORE - A man in his 60s died after a fire broke out on Thursday (Nov 19) morning at Block 78 in Redhill Lane.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to a fire at about 8am. Firefighters had to force open the main door of the two-room flat on the fourth floor.

The fire burnt a bed in the bedroom, said SCDF, and a body was found in the bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was believed to be living alone.

As at 11am, the area outside the unit was still cordoned off.

The SCDF had sent two fire engines, one Red Rhino, two fire bikes, an ambulance and two support vehicles to the scene. The fire was put out within five minutes.

Madam Ho Oi Wah, 84, who lives alone on the fifth floor, said that residents were told to evacuate.

"I was so scared because I didn't know what was happening. There was also a strong smell of smoke. We waited downstairs for around 40 minutes before they said we could return to our flats."

The police are investigating the unnatural death.
