Man charged over giving false information that fiancee was kidnapped

A man who allegedly claimed that his fiancee had been kidnapped by loansharks was charged on Thursday with giving false information to the police.

Chiang Sing Poon, 60, is said to have told a staff sergeant on July 5 that his fiancee Sheng Guo Fang had been abducted by loansharks who demanded a $90,000 ransom which he knew to be false.

His case was adjourned to Feb 21 for him to get a lawyer.

If convicted, he could be jailed for up to one year or fined up to $5,000 or both.
