Man arrested over rental scam amounting to nearly $15,000

The police have arrested a 31-year-old man who is believed to be involved in at least nine cases of rental scams.

Between 1 and 10 July this year, he collected deposits and rent amounting to almost $15,000 for a unit located in Serangoon North Avenue 1. He then cut off all contact with his victims.

He was arrested on Tuesday evening, a day after the police issued an appeal for information through the media.

If convicted of cheating, he faces up to 10 years in jail and a fine.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Keok Tong, reminded potential tenants to request documentary proof of flat ownership that bears the flat owner's name and approval letter from the Housing Board, before handing over rent or deposits.
