Malay CultureFest launches with musical medley celebrating history of Kampong Glam

SINGAPORE - The three-week-long Malay CultureFest 2015 kicked off on Saturday with an overture by Orkestra Melayu Singapura which played popular genres over the years to celebrate the history of Kampong Glam.

Alongisde the festival, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli also launched a special exhibition on the historic precinct of Kampong Glam, where different communities such as the Javanese, the Boyanese and the Arabs settled and mingled. It includes artefacts, and personal accounts of former residents, tradesmen and patrons. The exhibition, Kampong Gelam: Beyond The Port Town, at the Malay Heritage Centre opens to the public on Sunday and ends on April 3.
