The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has done well in keeping its construction sites dengue-free so far. None of the 60 construction projects were found to have mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus in checks by the National Environment Agency this year.

This update was given by LTA's Deputy Chief Executive Chua Chong Kheng at the "x-dengue" pledge signing event at Downtown Line's Upper Changi Station construction site on Monday. As a demonstration of the commitment, a coordinated carpet combing exercise, which includes fogging and housekeeping measures, will be carried out on Monday at all of LTA's major construction sites on the island.

Despite the fact that construction areas account for less than 10 per cent of mosquito breeding spots found this year, Mr Chua said that there is still a need to be vigilant because most of their projects span over a large area and the potential for mosquito breeding is always there due to the nature of their work.

"LTA has always taken these controls very seriously," he said. "With about 22,000 workers working at LTA sites on a daily basis, we have a duty and responsibility to prevent the transmission of dengue fever to our workers as well as to the communities that we work in."
