Hiking trailers are used during youth expeditions to enable participants to challenge themselves to cover longer distances without overly stressing the back, said the National Youth Council (NYC) which oversees Outward Bound Singapore (OBS).

"The trail walker still has significant weight that is borne by the participant but the effort is transferred to the leg muscles and waist rather than loading the shoulders and spine. It in no way reduces the toughness of the expedition," said an NYC spokesman.
