Those heading to Little India this weekend will not be able to buy alcohol or drink it in public areas, with the police instituting the move after last Sunday's incident.

Here are some questions you may have about the ban:

1. Will I be able to buy alcohol at liquor shops, restaurants, hotels, pubs, coffeeshops and convenience shops in Little India this weekend?

Answer: No. The Government has told all of these establishments not to sell alcohol from 6am on Saturday to 6am on Monday.

2. If I'm having a party at home, can I drink alcohol and serve it to my guests?

Answer: Yes. The ban on consumption only applies to public places, not homes.

3. If I'm a tourist who has bought alcohol duty-free at the airport, can I drink it in my hotel or hostel room?

Answer: Yes. The ban on consumption only applies to public places.

4. If I bought the alcohol somewhere else, can I bring it into the banned area?

Answer: Yes, as long as you do not drink it in public places. People who are just bringing the alcohol home or to their hotel or hostel rooms do not have to worry. However you might be spot-checked and asked by police officers why you have brought in the alcohol.

5. If I have had one too many drinks at my friend's home in the banned zone, can take a walk around the area or make my way home on public transport?

Answer: If you are very drunk, you are encouraged not to because if you are caught behaving in a disorderly manner, you may be arrested by police under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act.
