A little girl rides a rocking horse as her father sits nearby, reading a newspaper. A few years later, they walk across a void deck, he to work and she to school. In his hand, again, is a newspaper.

These scenes are part of a short film produced by Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese flagship newspaper of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), centred on the relationship between a father and his daughter, where the paper plays a subtle role.

The 10-minute film is part of a series of events aimed at engaging readers following Lianhe Zaobao's revamp in July.

Pa's Expressions was scripted and directed by Mr Wayne Peng, a Taiwan-born commercial film director whose award-winning works include commercials he directed for Bank of China and Nippon Paint.

At the 2005 Asian Television Awards, he won the Best Director Award for the documentary drama Ge Wu Zhong Guo.

To capture the passing of time and sense of history, Mr Peng and his production team spent time researching and recreating the past to showcase Lianhe Zaobao's transformations through the decades.

Pa's Expressions will premiere at 10pm on Monday, on StarHub Channels 111 and 825. Viewers can also watch it online at the same time on zaobao.sg.

The film will also be screened at a sharing session next Friday at the National Museum's Gallery Theatre, where Mr Peng will give a talk and answer questions from the audience. He will be accompanied by Mr Goh Sin Teck, editor of Lianhe Zaobao. To attend the event, which is free, register by sending your name and contact number to zbnow@sph.com.sg.
