Lee Kuan Yew turns 90: Readers send best wishes to Singapore's former PM

Good wishes have come in for former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who turns 90 today, Sept 16.

On The Straits Times Facebook page, more than 320 people have sent their wishes so far. The Straits Times also asked readers to send their greetings to stdigital@sph.com.sg, and more than 80 have been received as of 3pm.

Many expressed gratitude to Mr Lee for what he had done to transform Singapore into a modern city.

Reader Yuen Kah Yin said "I will live here all my life because I am proud to be a Singaporean because of you. You are and will always be well-respected by us".

Another reader, Mr Rajasegaran Ramasamy, said his 88-year-old father, 73-year-old mother and 90-year-old father-in-law had all come to Singapore in search of a better life.

"They have lived through your time and are benefiting from your great leadership and consequently we, their children and their grand-children, are reaping the fruits of your labour. Thank you Mr Lee," he said.

On ST's Facebook, Mr Mohd Naser Ahmad said: "You had done so much beyond imagination for this tiny island. Thank you and many happy returns on this special occasion."

Some shared anecdotes about Mr Lee, who became Singapore's first prime minister in 1959, stepping down from that post in 1990 and from Cabinet in 2011.

On the ST Facebook page, Mr Kian Tan said that he attended a community dinner with his father 50 years ago. "Mr Lee Kuan Yew came to my table and patted my botak head. I was delighted and refused to wash my head for several days. I am 55 this year and always remember his touch. Blessed birthday Mr Lee. You had done so much for Singapore."

Ahead of his birthday, Mr Lee told The Straits Times in an e-mail interview that "I am lucky to reach 90". Asked what gave him the greatest satisfaction when he looked back on his life, he said it was "to see Singapore's progress".

He will be celebrating his birthday with his family at a private dinner.

You can send in your birthday wishes for Mr Lee to stdigital@sph.com.sg by Sept 18, 10pm, and we will feature them on our website.
