The government published the National Health Plan, a 20-year plan to overhaul Singapore's health system on Feb 2, 1983.
This was triggered by the increase in the nation's health bill which had risen four-fold from $59 million in 1971 to $257 million in 1981.
The plan included the building of more healthcare facilities, extending healthcare services and the Medisave scheme.
