Laguna raises $400,000 for needy students

The Laguna National Golf and Country Club in Tanah Merah yesterday raised $400,000 for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF), as part of its Laguna National Charity Classic golf event.

The event's organising committee chairman, Mr Chan Chong Beng, presented a cheque to SPMF chairman Han Fook Kwang, who is also managing editor of Singapore Press Holdings' English and Malay Newspapers Division.

Besides the golfing event, there were cultural performances, an auction and a dinner for 350 guests.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong graced the event, which topped its fund-raising expectations of $320,000 by raising an additional $80,000 through the evening's auction.

One of the auctioned items, an autographed photograph of Tiger Woods, went for $53,000 after Mr Goh added his own signature to it.

The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund started in 2000, and helps children from low-income families with their school-related expenses.
