SINGAPORE - Around 108,000 households and 9,500 businesses in Jurong will be able to choose from multiple electricity providers from next April.

This will impact households with postal codes from 60 to 64, in an area that roughly covers Jurong East, Jurong West, Tuas, Pioneer and Boon Lay, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) announced on Friday (Oct 20).

This is the next phase of the electricity market liberalisation that will eventually be rolled out to 1.3 million accounts by the second half of 2018.

The authority said that consumers stand to benefit from competitive pricing, enhanced service standards and innovative packages. It added that electricity will still be supplied reliably as SP Group will continue operating the national power grid.

However, it will not be compulsory for them to switch to a retailer if they do not want to.

An online platform will be launched to allow consumers to compare different price packages.

There are now 26 licensed electricity retailers in Singapore.
