A quarter century ago, when The Straits Times offices used to be in Kim Seng Road, I often used to finish my working day by unwinding with a couple of whiskeys at a now-defunct pub called The Green Man in Capitol Building, off the Padang.
The bar staff sensed when I was inclined to be chatty and when I wished to be left alone. As for my drink itself, there was never a question: Jack Daniel's, straight up.
