Dogs are becoming increasingly popular as pets, judging by the number of licences issued, which hit a high last year.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) issued about 67,000 dog licences last year, a figure that has been rising since 2011 when 59,000 were registered. It is compulsory for pet dogs to be licensed.
