Ahead of Deepavali this Saturday, 16 women MPs wore saris of different colours and designs for a photo shoot outside Parliament House last Friday.

The idea was conceived by Tamil newspaper Tamil Murasu, which approached Senior Minister of State Indranee Rajah to get a group of her colleagues together for a photo in the run-up to the Festival of Lights.

Several MPs like senior ministers of state Josephine Teo, Amy Khor and Sim Ann were familiar with saris, having worn them to community events. For some of the newer MPs, it was their first time donning one.

The photos, published in Tamil Murasu yesterday, are a nod to Singapore's multiracial harmony where all festivals are celebrated.
