An independent committee has been set up to design MediShield Life, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Saturday morning.

Speaking on the sidelines of a community event to celebrate Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital's 103 years of caring for the sick, needy and elderly, Mr Gan said the new scheme must be able to provide enough protection for everyone for life, while keeping premiums affordable.

Plans to introduce the MediShield Life scheme, which will eventually provide medical coverage for all Singaporeans for life, was first announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his National Day Rally speech in August this year. The move is part of the revamp of the national medical insurance scheme MediShield, which aims to ease people's worries about racking up large hospital bills when they fall very ill.

Council of Presidential Advisors member Bobby Chin heads the 11-member committee that has six months to come up with their proposal.
