Inaugural Red Cross awards to honour 29 contributors and volunteers

Some 29 humanitarian veterans, volunteers and organizations will be honoured for their contributions to the Singapore Red Cross Society (SRC).

The SRC said that these individuals had selflessly given their time, expertise and resources in order to further the mission of the Society, which runs disaster relief efforts and other community activities such as first-aid training.

Among them is former SRC chairman Lt Gen (Ret) Winston Choo who was at the helm for 12 years until 2008 and long-time volunteer Mr Tang Chun Tuck who has been involved for close to 50 years and has helped out in major local disasters such as the Hotel New World collapse in 1986.

Said the current SRC chairman Mr Tee Tua Ba: "Our achievements over the past 64 years bear testament to the collective power of humanity. I regard volunteerism and partnerships as the cornerstones of our mission to serve humanity and save lives." All winners of this inaugural Singapore Red Cross Awards will receive their prizes at a ceremony on May 22 from president Tony Tan Keng Yam.
