SINGAPORE - Around 3,200 households in Yuhua can now have "smarter" homes.

This includes having sensors that can help monitor the well-being of the elderly and a mobile application that sends weekly updates on a household's electricity and water consumption.

On Saturday, the Housing Development Board and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore rolled out Smart Home packages for households in the Jurong East neighbourhood following a successful trial in 10 homes.

The agencies are holding a two-day roadshow at Yuhua Community Club this weekend where residents can purchase packages at a discounted rate. Prices start from $10.

"This is part of a larger year-long trial, to gain a deeper understanding of how smart technologies can benefit more families," said Ms Grace Fu, Adviser to Yuhua Grassroots Organisations and Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, at the launch of the roadshow.

One of the packages available is a monitoring system for seniors who live alone. Homes with this systems will have sensors installed to track their movements, while the elderly will get to wear a mobile panic button. Caregivers and family members will get a text message when irregular patterns of behaviour are detected, such as when no movements are sensed for a period of time, or when the elderly pushes the panic button.

Another package monitors the use of energy and water. Households can set energy consumption targets on a mobile application, and the system will send an alert when the energy usage is too high. Users can also switch their appliances on or off remotely.

Ms Fu said the aim of these Smart Home devices is to use technology "to help us with the challenges we face at home on a daily basis, to make our family's lives as well as our own even better".
