It was all peaceful, but certainly not quiet, at the Singapore Management University (SMU) campus yesterday as the university celebrated the United Nations' International Day of Peace. Students of about 40 nationalities dazzled with a colourful display of flags, national costumes, cuisines and cultural performances. SMU president Arnoud De Meyer (wearing a tie) also unveiled a peace pole in the concourse of the campus near Bras Basah MRT station. Peace poles bearing the message "May peace prevail on earth" are internationally recognised as symbols of peace. SMU's monument, which carries the same words in Singapore's four official languages, has been placed permanently in front of its schools of accountancy and law.
