Unionists, former constituents and others were at the People’s Association yesterday to lend Madam Halimah Yacob their support. Here are their stories.

A passionate leader who truly cares for her residents - that was the unanimous opinion a group of volunteers from Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC had of Madam Halimah Yacob.

The more than 40-strong contingent from her former constituency was among her supporters who turned up at the People's Association Headquarters yesterday, before the Nomination Centre opened to the public at 10am.

Kitchen assistant Florence Yap, 57, who accompanied Madam Halimah on house visits and helped out at Meet-the-People Sessions for two years till she stepped down as MP and Speaker last month to run for president, said residents have felt the impact of her leadership.

"Initially, residents were reluctant to open their doors. But later, we saw smiling faces whenever we accompanied her around at least once a week - they could feel her sincerity."

Added businessman Vijelal N. Krishnan, 65: "When we were giving out ration packets, she kept going even though volunteers were tired already."

The heat yesterday did little to deter the group's spirits.

"We all came here willingly to support her, not just as volunteers, but also in our personal capacities," said customer service officer Susie Tong, 61.
