SINGAPORE - It was a sweet reunion - 30 years later - for Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

In a Facebook post, Mr Goh shared photographs he took with American tennis legends Chris Evert, 58, and Martina Navratilova, 59, at last Sunday's BNP Paribas WTA Finals held here.

He also posted another photo of himself with the two former champions that was taken three decades ago, when he had a game with them. Also in that photo is former minister Dr Lee Boon Yang, now chairman of Keppel Corporation and Singapore Press Holdings. The match took place at Mount Pleasant on Sept 22, 1990 when Mr Goh was First Deputy Prime Minister. It was one of a series of doubles matches held to raise money for the Community Chest. Other players included tennis stars Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati as well as several Cabinet ministers. The tennis stars were reportedly impressed with Mr Goh's skills with Navratilova praising his "mean forehand".

Of his latest meeting, Mr Goh, 73, said: "30 years later, delighted to have a pic with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, great former world tennis champions, at WTA Women's Finals at Indoor Stadium. They are still slim as a pencil and fit as a fiddle. Me? Ah… looking more like a paddle."

Mr Goh, who is known to play tennis, was at the WTA Finals held at the Indoor Stadium on Sunday and attended the prize-giving ceremony. American top seed Serena Williams beat Romanian Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the singles champion title.
