Some 140 third-year students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic were given insights into the personal and professional life of Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob at a sharing and dialogue session on Monday.

Madam Halimah shared about her previous roles with the National Trades Union Congress, the Ministry of Social and Family Development and as the workers' vice-chairman of the Standards Committee of the International Labour Conference in Geneva where she helped develop employment standards.

She also reminded and encouraged students to take an interest in the community and find a cause they are interested in. "Think deeply and remain engaged. Read widely and ask questions. It's important to get involved."

The session was organised as part of the polytechnic's Heroes Seminar which features role models who have touched lives and made an impact on society. Launched in 2009 by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies for students taking the World Issues: A Singapore Perspective module, the seminar is a platform for character and citizenship education at the polytechnic.
