Friendship that spans generations

The longstanding friendship between Singapore and Myanmar is captured in a photograph that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong gave Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi last night.

Dating back to May 1965, it shows Mr Lee's father, former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, being sent off at an airport in India by Ms Suu Kyi's mother Khin Kyi, who was then her country's ambassador to India.

The late Mr Lee was in Mumbai for a conference and travelled on to Rangoon, now known as Yangon.

The photo was presented to Ms Suu Kyi at a dinner Mr Lee hosted for her last night at the Istana.

Both leaders noted that ties between the two countries were growing, and explored ways in which Singapore could help Myanmar develop its economy.
