World Cup fever has gripped Tampines with some 600 football fans gathering at Tampines West Community Club on Saturday morning to catch the live telecast of the match between game defending champions Spain and Netherlands.

Stunning goals from Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben fired the Netherlands to a 5-1 demolition of Spain who endured a miserable start to their World Cup season. It was Spain's heaviest defeat under coach Vicente Del Bosque who took over in 2008, and the first time a defending champion has conceded five goals in their World Cup opening match.

Tampines West Community Club is among some 40 community centres around Singapore which will be screening as many of the 64 World Cup matches as possible. Organised by grassroots organisations, the screenings will be accompanied by fun fringe events such as lucky draws and football quizzes.

For details on events and which community centres and clubs will show which games, go to the People's Association website. Admission is free.
