SINGAPORE - Fifteen firefighters from Changi Fire station sprang into action on Tuesday morning (June 23) to help drivers, passengers and pedestrians caught in flash floods just outside the station.

Other areas around Singapore were similarly affected, said the PUB, which activated its Quick Response Teams.

In a statement on Facebook, it said flash floods were reported at Jurong Town Hall Road, Opera Estate, the intersection of Bedok North Avenue 4 and Upper Changi Road, and New Upper Changi Road.

A tree also fell on the Bukit Timah Expressway towards the Pan-Island Expressway near the Dairy Farm Road exit at about 8am. Although no injuries were reported, a lamp post was damaged. The tree was cleared by about 9am.

The heaviest rainfall of around 108.8mm was recorded at Bedok South between 7.10am and 9.05am. The figure is more than half of Singapore's average monthly rainfall in June.

The PUB said that between 7.15am and 8.35am, the volume of rain equivalent to about 880 Olympic-sized pools fell on the area. The national water agency added that the first flash flood was reported at 8.30am and that each subsided in 10 to 20 minutes.

The PUB said its Quick Response Teams "were immediately deployed to all sites".

By 9.20am, flash floods at all locations had subsided, it said.

PUB officers helped residents and checked the drainage systems for any obstructions.

Video clips uploaded to Twitter and Facebook showed Bedok Canal filled to the brim, and two vehicles partially submerged in water at the intersection of Upper Changi Road and Bedok North Avenue 4, near Changi Fire Station.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that its officers moved two stranded vehicles away from the affected area at about 8.30am. An SCDF ambulance, which was not on duty and returning to the fire station, also stalled at the same intersection. It returned to the station after the flash flood.

There was no disruption to the provision of emergency services from Changi Fire Station during the flash flood, said the SCDF.
