SINGAPORE - No injuries were reported when a fire – likely of electrical origin – broke out in a condominium unit in Balestier on March 12.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the blaze at 20, Jalan Raja Udang – the address of the 16-storey Global Ville at about 5.15pm.

The fire involved the contents of a 15th-floor unit’s utility room and an adjoining service yard, and was put out using a water jet.

SCDF advises residents not to overload power sockets, and to switch off electrical appliances when they are not in use.

In videos of the incident seen by The Straits Times, black smoke can be seen from afar, billowing from the top of the condominium.

In 2024,

SCDF responded to 1,990 calls involving fire

, of which 968 were for fires in residential premises. The figure remained largely unchanged from 2023, when 970 residential fires were recorded.

Fires due to unattended cooking and of electrical origin were the most common causes of home fires, making up 35 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively, of reports received by SCDF in 2024.
