SINGAPORE - There was a fire at Orchard Towers on Wednesday (Aug 31) morning, but no one was injured.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it learnt of the fire at 8.15am and dispatched two fire engines, two red rhinos, two fire bikes and two support vehicles.

Fifteen people evacuated on their own before the SCDF arrived at the scene.

The Straits Times understands that the fire took place on the lower levels of one of the two tower blocks, where Jasons The Gourmet Grocer supermarket is located.

Accounts assistant Vera Tan, 23, told The Straits Times that she had wanted to buy a drink at the supermarket after coming in to work in the unaffected tower block around 9am.

She found it closed instead, with SCDF officers on the premises.

"When I arrived at the office building, I could see an SCDF vehicle," Ms Tan said.

"When I went in, we could still go up. But the neighbouring building - the other tower - was pitch black and it was smoky."

The fire was put out by SCDF officers with one waterjet, and its cause is being investigated.
