SINGAPORE - Since 2013, more than 7,000kg of used soap has been collected from hotel rooms across the Asia Pacific for a soap recycling project.
And in July, two Singapore hotels – Hilton Singapore and Conrad Centennial Singapore – also became involved.
Since June, the two hotels have been collecting used soap bars, which are sent to Hong Kong for recycling. The new soap is then transported to communities in countries like the Philippines, Cambodia, and Thailand.
The project is a collaboration between hotel chain Hilton Worldwide, DHL Global Forwarding, which helps transport the soap for recycling, non-governmental organisation Soap Cycling, and the United World College.
"On average, less than half a soap bar gets used by guests at the Hilton Singapore," said the organisations in a joint statement.
"In the meantime, thousands of underprivileged families in Asia - especially in South Asia - cannot afford to buy soap."
More than 175,000 new soap bars have been created as of September this year.
