Castle made of 60,000 used beverage cartons highlights green carnival

A carnival was held at *SCAPE on Saturday as part of this year's Youth for the Environment Day.

It showcased works from the finalists of a youth-led "Upcycling" competition, which is co-organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and challenges participants to use unwanted materials to create a unique lifestyle product practical enough for everyday use.

The event also featured a castle made of 60,000 used beverage cartons to highlight the importance of recycling. Second Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Grace Fu, who was guest-of-honour at the event, completed the final piece of the installation.

The castle will enter the Singapore Book of Records, and is also an attempt to break the Guinness World Records as the largest structure made of waste materials.

This year's event has taken a youth-directed approach with activities organised by youths for their peers, said NEA. Youths will be actively calling on their friends, family and the public to take greater care of the environment, in line with this year's theme "Be Eco With Me".
