Endangered star tortoise stolen from Chinese Garden

Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing an endangered star tortoise worth $2,000 from the Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum at the Chinese Garden.

The police said on Wednesday that on Oct 15, a 59-year-old man reported the theft that happened at the museum in Jurong.

On Tuesday morning, the police established the identity of one of the suspects - a 42-year-old man - after investigations and reviewing camera footage in the area.

He was arrested at his home in Jurong West. His 25-year-old male accomplice was arrested later in the day at his home on Mei Ling Street.

If convicted of Theft with Common Intention, they face a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both.

They are also liable for an offence of Cruelty To Animals under The Animals and Birds Act, which carries a maximum fine of $10,000, up to a year in jail, or both.
