SINGAPORE - Some 120 elderly individuals living in Toa Payoh received festive bags of household items on Friday (Jan 22), which included canned pacific clams and oranges, to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
The event was organised by the Singapore Press Holdings Staff Volunteers Club and the Toa Payoh Care Corner Senior Activity Centre, who identified seniors living in one-room flats in the area to receive the bags,
Each bag, worth about $50, was filled with items such as sardines, cream crackers and rice, in addition to the clams and oranges.
The staff volunteers facilitated a morning of games with the elderly at the Care Corner, followed by a catered lunch. In addition, they visited the homes of three elderly individuals with mobility problems to deliver a bag to them.
"I'm very happy... and I've been up really early, since 6am (to get ready)," said Madam Wong Poh Kim, 68, after receiving the volunteers into her home and looking into her goody bag.
Madam Wong, a vegetarian, added that she will give away the meat items and take her time to enjoy the rest of the items.
