SOME 150 Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) students travelled to schools across the island on double-decker buses and trucks yesterday to tell junior college students about their university.
The students, who were split into three convoys, went to nine schools, including Raffles Institution, Anderson Junior College and NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.
At each school, the students set up booths displaying their projects and innovations, such as aerial drones and electric vehicles.
They also held workshops to demonstrate silkscreen and 3D printing methods.
Hwa Chong Institution student Chang Wei Qin, 17, is taking her A levels this year and hopes to study medicine or engineering.
She took a ride on an electric vehicle built by SUTD students, and said: "It's quite impressive that they built it themselves. I knew that SUTD is a very new university, but I didn't know much about it."
SUTD second-year student Sherwin Lau, 23, who visited Hwa Chong Institution, said he chose SUTD over other local universities because of its hands-on approach.
"It's not just about studying and exams. To be a designer or engineer, you can't just be good in theory, you need to be hands-on," he said.
The SUTD students also celebrated the move from their interim Dover site to their new Upper Changi campus located along Somapah Road, where they ended their day with a carnival, game booths and music performances. About 1,000 guests, including students and staff, attended the event.
SUTD, Singapore's fourth university, was set up to give students an option to explore a multi-disciplinary education, cutting across fields like engineering, design and the humanities.
It has close to 1,000 students and will take in its fourth batch in May. It plans to eventually cater for 4,000 undergraduates and 2,000 postgraduate students.
