SINGAPORE - Applications for direct admission to secondary schools, junior colleges and polytechnics start this month, the Ministry of Education said on Monday.

Under the scheme, schools and polytechnics are given the flexibility to admit students based on the students' talents, achievements and personal qualities.

This year, 126 schools will take part in the exercise for students moving to Secondary 1 next year.

The application period and procedures will differ from school to school, and can be found on the schools' websites.

At junior college level, 21 institutions will take part in the exercise. All five polytechnics are also participating in the exercise.

Successful applicants under the Direct School Admissions exercise will be offered a place before taking their Primary School Leaving Examination or GCE O-level examinations, but they will still have to meet the minimum academic standard for the school.
