Driver assisting with police probe after e-bike rider injured in hit-and-run in Hougang

A 23-year-old e-bike rider was injured in a hit-and-run at the junction of Hougang Avenue 3 and Upper Serangoon Road.

SINGAPORE – A 70-year-old man is assisting with police investigations following a hit-and-run in Hougang on July 13 involving an e-bike rider.
The police said they were alerted to the accident involving a car and a power-assisted bicycle at the junction of Hougang Avenue 3 and Upper Serangoon Road at about 6.40pm.
In a video of the accident posted by road safety page SG Road Vigilante on Facebook, an e-bike rider is seen crossing the road and stopping at a traffic island, where pedestrians wait to cross the road.
A car suddenly surges towards the island and bounces as it mounts the kerb, knocking a street sign off its post.
The impact sends the rider flying to the middle of the road, where he narrowly misses being hit by two approaching vehicles.
The car comes to a halt after hitting a traffic light on the road divider.
Meanwhile, the rider struggles to get up and manages to walk back to the traffic island on his own. A passer-by soon appears and checks on him. The e-bike is reduced to a pile of crushed debris.
After a few moments, the car is seen reversing and moving off.
In the video, another angle of the road shows the moments leading up to the accident. The same car is seen travelling on the extreme right lane, before cutting across two lanes to make a left turn on a slip road.
The 23-year-old rider was conscious when taken to Sengkang General Hospital, according to the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force.
The driver of the car is assisting with police investigations.
