DPM Tharman joins breaking-of-fast session

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam (second from left) took part in the iftar - or breaking-of-fast session - held at the Jamae Chulia Mosque in South Bridge Road yesterday.

He also gave out supermarket vouchers worth $50 each to 50 needy families to spread cheer during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, at the event held by the mosque and the Singapore Tenkasi Muslim Welfare Society.

About 900 people took part in the session, including community leaders from Malay-Muslim and interfaith groups, as well as members of the public.

The minister also toured the mosque, which was gazetted as a national monument in 1974.
