Trailer driver given $5,000 fine, 3-year driving ban for negligent driving

SINGAPORE - A trailer driver was fined $5,000 and banned from driving for three years on Monday for causing the death of a motorcyclist by negligent driving.

Leong Chin Nyan, 63, failed to give way to Mr William Choong, 30, when turning right into the minor road of Tuas South Street 5 towards Tuas View Crescent, at 8.43am on June 1 last year. The incident happened at a T-junction without a traffic light.

Mr Choong's motorcycle, which was going straight in the opposite direction, collided with the left back of Leong's trailer. The impact seriously injured Mr Choong and damaged the green Kawasaki Kips motorcyle. He fell to the ground in the middle of the junction and was pronounced dead on the spot just after 9am.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy left the sentence to the court, while Leong's lawyer Raymond Ng asked for leniency for his client. Leong, who pleaded guilty, could have been jailed up to two years and fined.
