Senior engineer jailed for molesting sub-tenant

SINGAPORE - Drunk after some Christmas merriment, a Filipino man molested his sleeping flatmate.

When she woke up screaming, he was so terrified that he hid under her bed, before running off.

On Tuesday, the senior engineer was jailed for two weeks.

The 29-year-old, who pleaded guilty, was not named to protect the victim's identity.

A district court heard that the 28-year-old victim, who was feeling unwell, had returned to the flat from work to rest at about 3pm on Dec 13 last year.

She went to sleep at about 9.30pm. Her room-mate came back two hours later and locked the bedroom door before going to sleep on a separate bed.

Then at about 3.20am, the engineer returned after a Christmas party.

He used a spare key to open her bedroom door, and she woke up to him touching her breast. The tenant was alerted and she called the police.

The man's lawyer told the court that his client had been intoxicated, but agreed that this was not a defence.

The accused, who has moved out of the flat, could have been jailed for up to two years, fined and caned. A charge of criminal trespass was taken into consideration during his sentencing.
