These barriers include shame and guilt, the fear of not being believed, and a lack of support and empathy from friends and family, she added.

The #MeToo movement overseas has also contributed to more conversations about sexual assault and people finding the courage to step forward, said Mr Marshall Lim, associate director of Invictus Law Corporation.
