A 33-year-old man who assaulted a bus driver was yesterday jailed for 22 months and five weeks for that and other offences.
A district court heard that just before 9pm on Dec 9 last year, Mohamed Faridz Abdul Azeez, whose occupation is not known, boarded SBS Transit bus service 2 near Block 220 in Victoria Street.
He was with his girlfriend, Ms Nur Asyiqin, 28, and her two daughters. Ms Nur Asyiqin was pushing a baby stroller with her older daughter in it, while Faridz was carrying the younger child.
As Faridz was boarding, the bus driver Zhang Lei, 35, closed the door before he was fully on board. The door hit Faridz's left arm and the head of the little girl. Angry, he punched Mr Zhang in the mouth.
The couple then tried to get off the bus, but the driver attempted to stop them by holding on to the stroller. Seeing this, Faridz punched Mr Zhang three more times, leaving him with a bruised lower lip and a loose front tooth.
It was not his only brush with the law. On Feb 6 this year, Faridz exposed himself to a 50-year-old woman in the void deck of Block 109, Simei Street 1. He fled when she tried to take a picture of him.
At about 6.50pm on April 6, Customs officers found him with a box of duty unpaid cigarettes in the lift lobby of Block 135, Bedok North Street 2. The duty would have been $1,307.56.
On Aug 29, Faridz snatched a pouch containing $10,000 from a 62-year-old man at a lift landing in Block 2, Hougang Avenue 3.
He had tailed the victim from a coffee shop in Geylang, having spotted the man holding a stack of cash.
Two days later, he borrowed a car even though he had been barred from driving for an earlier offence.
Plain-clothes police officers spotted Faridz and arrested him.
Faridz pleaded guilty to five charges: causing hurt, committing an obscene act, snatch theft, driving under disqualification, and possession of duty unpaid goods.
He was also fined $40,000 and barred from driving for four years.
