SINGAPORE - A Chinese national who stabbed his wife's lover with a pair of scissors was jailed for one year and ordered to be given three strokes of the cane on Wednesday.

Fan Jianfeng, 34, a driver, admitted to causing hurt to Mr Liu Wei, 24, by stabbing him repeatedly at the void deck of Block 517D Jurong West Street 52 on Oct 12 this year.

A district court heard that Fan was at home with his wife, Ms Luo Shu Dan, 27, when he found out that she was having an affair with Mr Liu. Mr Liu and Ms Luo, both factory workers, were colleagues.

He demanded that his wife take him to meet Mr Liu. But she said no when he asked her to hand over a pair of scissors and a screwdriver.

The couple went to Lakeside MRT station that evening. Fan bought a pair of scissors from a 7-Eleven store without his wife's knowledge.

When they were near the block, Ms Luo called Mr Liu and asked him to meet her.

The couple walked towards the void deck of Block 517D. When Mr Liu showed up, Fan charged at him and stabbed him multiple times. He stopped only when the victim collapsed on the ground bleeding.

Mr Liu was warded for three days for several cuts, mostly on his back. He was given 36 days of medical leave.

In mitigation, Fan said he realised his mistake. He said his wife became his only dependant when his mother died shortly before he wed.

He added that he could not accept that the victim had snatched his wife away and destroyed his family.

"After I found out, I was badly affected. It was a bad dream for me. So now, my family and future are gone," he said through an interpreter.

He said he missed his son whom he had not seen for one year and hoped to get a light sentence so that he could be re-united with his child.

District Judge Christopher Goh said the victim's injuries were quite severe and that Fan had stabbed the victim several times.

Fan could have been jailed for up to seven years, fined, caned or received any combination of the punishments.
