Man gets jail, caning for raping friend he met online

He gets 14 years' jail, 22 strokes for crime that took place while his grandmother was home

His grandmother was home when he lured his Malaysian Facebook friend - who had come to Singapore to look for a job - to their Tampines flat.

But her presence did not deter Yap Jun Cheng from raping his 20-year-old victim in his bedroom.

The victim cried for help but got no response from the older woman in the March 4, 2013 incident.

Yap, now 26, was yesterday jailed 14 years and ordered to receive 22 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to three sexual offences.

The Singaporean, who is currently unemployed, admitted that he raped, sexually penetrated and molested the woman from Sabah, who is now 24, in his flat. Eleven other charges - mainly for sex-related offences - were taken into consideration during sentencing.

In 2011, the victim accepted Yap's friend request on Facebook and communicated with him sporadically. They did not meet in person.

In February 2013, she decided to come to Singapore to look for a job and contacted Yap, then 22, via Facebook to ask for his help.

Yap, who was then a full-time national serviceman with the Singapore Civil Defence Force, met her at Paya Lebar MRT station in his uniform at around 9.30am on March 4 and took her to his home after saying that he wanted to change out of his uniform.

There, Yap pulled her into his bedroom, locked the door and professed his liking for her. When she tried to get away and held on to the door knob, he used so much strength to pull her away that the knob broke off, trapping her in the room.

Deputy Public Prosecutor David Khoo said the woman called out to Yap's grandmother a few times but received no response. Court documents did not mention why the woman, who is now 76, did not react. Yap then molested and raped his victim. When he was done, he told her that he would kill her.

DPP Khoo said: "The victim was extremely frightened. She set herself to do whatever it was that she had to do to leave the room alive, no matter how degrading or abhorrent."

Yap then made her perform oral sex on him. He later forced the door open with a hanger, and partially opened it when his grandmother approached. But his terrified victim, who was out of the woman's sight, did not dare call out for help as she was still afraid he would kill her.

The older woman later left the flat. When the victim told Yap that she was hungry, he asked her to cook some food. But she had to prepare the meal half-naked as Yap refused to allow her to dress herself from the waist down. He granted her repeated requests to cover up only when she was nearly scalded.

DPP Khoo said she stopped cooking when she became nauseous and told Yap she could consume her gastric medication only after she had food. He then agreed to take her out to eat. "The victim began to feel that she had some hope of leaving the flat alive," DPP Khoo said.

But Yap raped her another time in the living room before they left.

After eating at Bedok, he insisted on accompanying her to Boon Lay MRT station where he left her.

Her cousin-in-law sensed something was amiss when he picked her up that day in Malaysia and she told him about her ordeal. They returned to lodge a police report that day.

DPP Khoo urged Judicial Commissioner Pang Khang Chau to jail Yap for at least 16 years with 22 strokes of the cane. He said the woman was "highly traumatised" after the ordeal and found it difficult to trust men any more.
