SINGAPORE - A man who paid for the sexual services of a 14-year-old girl was sentenced to 10 months' jail on Thursday for underage sex.
Abdul Rahim Abubakar, 30, a boarding officer, had admitted to one of three charges of sexual penetration of a minor at a flat in Telok Blangah Crescent sometime in February 2012.
Two other charges of unnatural sex with the minor were considered during his sentencing.
The court heard that Rahim, then 27, obtained the girl's contact number from a mutual acquaintance sometime in February 2012.
He sent her an SMS, and offered $60 for her sexual services. She agreed.
He told the girl to meet him at Telok Blangah Drive. She was wearing a school uniform when she got off a taxi and he paid for her taxi fare.
He took her to a friend's flat nearby. He gave her $40 before she performed oral sex on him.
Before she left, he asked $20 back from her, assuring her that he would give her the money on another day.
She lodged a police report on March 26 that year stating "sometime between November 2011 and 23 March 2012, I performed fellatio for some male subjects on 4 different occasions''.
Counsel Teo Choo Kee said in mitigation that his client, who is single, had sought sex from someone who he thought was a prostitute, albeit a young one. He was told by his distant cousin that she had provided sexual services freely.
He said the offence arose from a commercial sex transaction which unfortunately involved an underage girl. He was remorseful and regretted receiving oral sex during those few moments of repressed desire, said Mr Teo.
District Judge Ng Peng Hong allowed Rahim to defer sentence until Aug 25 and to furnish bail of $15,000.
Rahim could have been jailed for up to 10 years and/or fined.
