Man charged with stealing $200K watch and cash from health club locker room

SINGAPORE - A 44-year-old man was charged in court on Friday with theft of property amounting to $202,136 from a hotel health club locker room.

Tan Kheng Seng allegedly stole a Franck Muller watch worth $200,000, $2,000 cash and RM400 (S$136) from Mr Kang Hui Wah, 77, at Shangri-La Hotel Health Club locker room at Orange Grove Road at about 2.30pm on Wednesday.

A police statement said that, following the complainant's report, Tanglin police conducted extensive ground enquiries and subsequently established the suspect's identity. The suspect was arrested at Jalan Sultan in the early hours the next day.

The wrist watch was subsequently recovered.

The prosecution asked that Tan be remanded at Tanglin for a week for investigation.

Tan, who was not represented, requested that he be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health, saying he is suffering from depression.

He will return to court on Sept 10.

If convicted of theft in dwelling, he faces a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.
