Delivery driver fined and banned for causing pedestrian's death

SINGAPORE - A delivery driver was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for five years on Thursday for causing the death of a pedestrian.

Chng Seow Kiat, 59, pleaded guilty to failing to keep a proper lookout when his van hit Mr Loo Peck Lay, 61, who was in the midst of crossing the road along the signalised T-junction of Jurong Town Hall Road by Pandan Gardens on Dec 30 last year.

Mr Loo died in hospital the next day from multiple injuries.

A district court heard that Chng was driving at 40 to 50kmh along Jurong Town Hall Road to do his delivery duties when he noticed the light was green as he approached the T-junction by Pandan Gardens.

He proceeded to accelerate and failed to notice the pedestrian who was in the midst of crossing the road within the pedestrian crossing.

He only saw Mr Loo when the latter was close by to his van. He braked but was unable to avoid Mr Loo, hitting him. Chng stopped the vehicle and called the police before checking on Mr Loo's injuries.

Chng could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
