Up to July 1993, Singapore had the Court of Appeal and the Court of Criminal Appeal, with the same judges presiding at different times.

When both were merged into a single Court of Appeal that hears civil as well as criminal appeals, its first appointed Judges of Appeal were Justice M. Karthigesu and Justice L. P. Thean.
