9 months' jail for groping woman while cycling

A man was cycling on a pavement at night when he groped a passer-by's breast and sped off.

The 33-year-old woman screamed at him but he did not stop.

Yesterday, barista Benny Tan Mien Kiat, 22, was sentenced to nine months' jail for molesting the woman while cycling past her on a pavement opposite Sengkang Secondary School between 11.45pm and 11.55pm on April 11 this year.

Investigations showed that the woman was walking home after grocery shopping.

Tan had just finished a cycling session with a group of acquaintances he had met through Facebook and was heading towards Punggol Road.

He groped the victim's breast over her clothing and sped off on his bicycle. She made a police report the next day. Police managed to identify Tan and arrested him on April 26.

A second charge of grabbing a 23-year-old woman's buttocks at a pavement along Punggol Road at about 12.05am on April 12 was considered during his sentencing.

Tan was previously sentenced to reformative training for possessing an offensive weapon.

He will start his jail sentence on Dec 23 as he wishes to celebrate his child's first birthday.

He could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined sentence for outrage of modesty.
